Whakarewarewa Loop Track
Exploring the Whakarewarewa Loop Track in Rotorua’s Redwoods Forest
Rotorua’s Whakarewarewa Forest offers a uniquely scenic and exhilarating cycling experience. The Whakarewarewa Loop Track is a 33-kilometre trail that winds through towering redwoods and native flora, providing a blend of beginner-friendly paths and slightly more technical sections. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your adventure on this beloved trail.
The Trail

The Whakarewarewa Loop Track covers a 33 km loop, most of which traverses forest paths with a well-draining surface thanks to the sandy, pumice-rich soil. This makes the track manageable in various weather conditions. The trail begins at the Waipa Carpark, where you’ll find toilets, showers, bike hire and cafes—ideal for grabbing a bite, or getting prepped before you head out.
The loop is completed in a clockwise direction, and while the first 26 kilometers stay deep within the serene redwoods, the final 6-7 kilometers bring you back on the Te Ara Ahi concrete cycleway, running alongside State Highway 5. Note there is only one two-way section beside the Tikitapu/Blue Lake.

Who is the Trail For?
This track is great for early intermediate riders and families alike. It’s graded 90% at Grade 2 (easy and flowy, with gentle gradients) and 10% at Grade 3 (slightly more technical), so most cyclists will find it enjoyable and achievable. Fast riders can finish the loop in around 2 hours, but for family groups or those looking to take it slow, allowing 3.5 hours is recommended.
Safety & Cell Coverage
Safety is well-considered in Whakarewarewa Forest. There’s cell signal coverage throughout the trail, so staying connected isn’t an issue, and an 0800 942 521 emergency number is available for assistance if needed. Large Map boards are spaced at regular intervals and the trail is marked with “LOOP” posts.

Ending Your Ride at the “Secret Spot”
After completing the trail, there’s no better way to unwind than at the Secret Spot, a local gem where you can relax with a “shinny dip” (a refreshing soak for your legs!) in hot tubs, surrounded by natural beauty. It’s the perfect way to cap off an invigorating half-day ride.
